New Integration Rule Sparks Debate:

Many Advocate for More Choice…Some States Seek Fewer Consequences…

By Heather M. Burroughs, Parent & Professional

Decades ago, people with disabilities and their families fought for basic civil rights.
Those fights led to protections like Section 504, the ADA, and the Olmstead decision, so people would not be forced into institutions simply because states failed to build real community options.

Better Together Center Opens for Adults with Disabilities in Utica!

And Heather Has something she wants to say…!

He’s probably blushing right now, and that’s okay. Mr. Modest never asks for the spotlight.

But the way Steve Gonyea helped rally his community around this is something we should all take notice of.

Steve doesn’t just talk about change. He builds it.

Through Finding Common Ground, I’ve watched him move conversations forward that most people avoid. He doesn’t wait for permission or perfect conditions. He looks at unmet needs and asks who needs to be at the table, then brings people together to get it done.

What happens when lived experience meets statewide leadership?

In this episode of Dadvocating, Simcha Weinstein and fellow Dadvocate Steve Gonyea sit down with Willow Baer, Commissioner of the New York State Office for People With Developmental Disabilities, for a candid kitchen table conversation about dads, disability, and what families really need from systems.

From what OPWDD actually oversees, to why father engagement matters, to how families can find their voice inside big systems, this episode is about showing up, being seen, and building real partnership.

Commissioner Baer shares what drew her to this work, how New York is working to protect family stability, and what gives her hope when the work feels heavy.

From services to self care, and even a surprise reveal at the end, this is a candid conversation you will want to stay for.
